Manassas, Virginia, site of two landmark battles in the War Between the States, ushered in a new era on August 29 when Micron Technology Inc. announced that it will invest $3 billion and hire 1,100 workers over 15 years to increase memory production at its plant in the city 40 miles (64 km.) west of Washington, D.C. The average annual wage will be close to $100,000 plus benefits.
Small business center to open in Manassas; Flory Center to suspend operations
“I am excited the City’s Economic Development Authority was able to help support our efforts to grow small businesses in the community,” said Patrick Small, economic development director for Manassas.
“Having an SBDC office located at CenterFuse in Historic Downtown Manassas will allow existing small businesses and aspiring business owners direct access to counseling and support services close to their homes and offices,” Small said.
Proposed hotel offers perks for City of Manassas
If all goes according to plan, the hotel’s construction will begin in April. It would stand near the DMV and The Landing at Cannon Branch, a townhome development that’s being built.
Micron building equipment for United States military
The company will be building semiconductors for the United States military. “It never made sense to me that we’re sourcing semiconductors from Chinese companies that are our adversaries,” Wittman said. Using devices made in America can prevent other countries from using technology to gain insight.
Amazon’s investment in Virginia is big. But not as big as Micron in Manassas.
While huge, Amazon’s total investment lags behind that of Micron. In September, the chip maker announced it would invest $3 billion at its city’s plant, where it will employ 1,100 new scientists who will make chips for autonomous cars. The investment remains the largest in the state’s history.

On Oct. 25, Lockheed Martin celebrated their 50th anniversary of the start of their Manassas facility. “People are key to our business,” said Jack Gellen, vice president and general manager of the Manassas site.
