Starting a Business? Check out the Manassas Business Start Up Guide.

A Virginia Leader in Business and Jobs

The City of Manassas recognizes that many members of our community faced hardships that they never imagined possible over the past year. Keeping your business open is essential to us, so when opportunities come our way to help businesses reduce their solid waste removal costs, we’re interested!

We’re partnering with two organizations to introduce food waste recycling to City businesses, and we think you’ll like working with them.

Prince William Food Rescue Heroes

Many of our community members have been faced with food insecurity, which is when a household cannot provide enough food for every person to live an active, healthy life. The program has recovered more than 10 million pounds of surplus food and over 8 million meals. Prince William Food Rescue Heroes will provide businesses with containers and will pick-up for FREE.

Please email Aaron Tolson at atolson@actspwc.org or visit pwfoodrescue.org for more information.

Compost Crew

The City is currently piloting a program for curbside food waste collection in the Wellington community. We’re planning to roll out this opportunity to all of our community in July. The program will benefit restaurants, offices, apartment buildings, and other businesses and organizations. Compost Crew will work directly with you to find the suitable container and collection schedule to meet your business needs. The best part is – the more residents and businesses that sign up – the lower the cost of the service for everyone. Better still – you’ll receive compost for your garden.

Please email Dan Israel at dan@thecompostcrew.com or visit compostcrew.com for more information.

By donating extra food to distribution sites, diverting food scraps to local farmers, and composting food scraps that go to the new composting facility at Ball’s Ford Road, we can divert between 30% and 50% of our recoverable food to feed families, support local farmers.

Glass Recycling

Did you know …

  • Glass manufacturers use 30% recycled glass as a standard part of their production.
  • Glass makes up about 10% – 25% of the trash disposed of by restaurants.

The City is working with Strategic Materials to develop glass recycling opportunities for businesses. Strategic Materials is the largest glass recycler in the United States. Right now, Virginia has no large-scale facility for processing recycled glass, and local landfills are receiving more than 7.6 million tons of glass every year. That’s right. Instead of using the glass as a marketable resource – it’s going straight in the trash. We want to change that.

We’re looking into ways to make it easier for businesses to recycle glass and transport it to a new mini glass transfer station at the edge of the City. We’d like to hear your ideas and opinions about getting the glass out of your trash and into the market.

Please email Monica Boehringer at mboehringer@manassasva.gov or call (703) 257-8256 for more information.

When you add it up – you can reduce your solid waste disposal costs by reducing the volume of recyclable materials you are currently paying to throw away. Right now, reduce, reuse, and recycle something more than just a catchy phrase – it’s a way to help you keep your business going.

Please call our offices on (703) 257-8256 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, if you have any questions or ideas regarding recycling opportunities.

Yours sincerely,

Monica Boehringer
