Our TeamHistory of Manassas Industry
Founded in 1873, Manassas evolved from a small agricultural community into a vital transportation hub with the railroad’s arrival. Despite Civil War disruptions, the economy recovered through textile manufacturing and agriculture. In the 20th century, diverse businesses, including manufacturing and retail, flourished. In the late 60’s, Manassas was chosen by IBM for a 500-acre facility focused on telecommunications and software development. Today, companies like Micron Technology, BAE Systems, and Lockheed Martin have replaced IBM and established themselves in that same campus, fostering growth in government contracting and technology industries.
Modern Economic Landscape
Today, Manassas has a mixed economy with a blend of traditional industries and newer sectors, like aero technology and healthcare innovation, reflecting its evolution from a small town to a thriving urban center.
Early Development
In the late 20th century, as the federal government expanded, Manassas began attracting technology firms. The notable tech giant was IBM, who built its Manassas facility in 1968 as part of its broader strategy to maintain a strong U.S. base for production and innovation in computers. The City’s strategic location made it a desirable spot for businesses needing access to government contracts.
1990s and 2000s
During the 1990s and early 2000s, Manassas saw a rise in technology companies as Lockheed Martin acquired IBM in 1996 and Micron established its semiconductor facility in 2002. This era was marked by the establishment of firms catering to both governmental and commercial needs, including non-profit leaders like Didlake.
Recent Developments
In the past decade, Manassas has continued to diversify its tech landscape, with a focus on areas such as artificial intelligence, aero and unmanned systems technology, and advanced manufacturing for both defense and semiconductor industries. In 2018 and again in 2024, Micron announced significant expansion plans to its Manassas facility. Targeted educational partnerships have contributed to a skilled workforce sustaining this growth.
Current Landscape
Today, Manassas hosts a mix of established tech companies and startups, contributing to a vibrant local economy. The City currently hosts one of the nation’s largest and most diverse One Million Cups chapters, a bustling coworking space, an award-winning market, and a growing healthcare sector through one of its largest employers, UVA Health Prince William Medical Center. The City’s ongoing commitment to innovation positions it as a tech industry leader in the D.C. metro.
