Electra Expands Manassas Facility to Accelerate Development of Hybrid-Electric Ultra Short Aircraft

Electra’s rapid growth and top engineering talent drive production of the EL9 forward

Manassas, VA—October 2, 2025—On September 30, Electra announced the expansion of its facilities in Manassas, Virginia, and Bleienbach, Switzerland, to support the company’s rapid growth and the development of its nine-passenger hybrid-electric EL9 Ultra Short aircraft.

“Electra is on a mission to transform aviation, and expanding our facilities ensures we will continue attracting the world-class engineering talent to design, develop, and commercialize our groundbreaking EL9,” said Marc Allen, CEO of Electra. “We’re giving our teams the resources they need to get our Ultra Short aircraft into the hands of our customers and deliver on the promise of Direct Aviation, making regional air travel more convenient, affordable, and sustainable.”

At its headquarters at Manassas Regional Airport, where much of the company’s cutting-edge research is designed and tested, Electra has opened a new 15,000-square-foot hangar and 6,000-square-foot office space. The expanded facility will house development and engineering teams. This addition complements Electra’s existing 36,000-square-foot headquarters facility in Manassas. Electra has more than doubled the size of its workforce in 2025 and will add dozens more engineering team members in the coming year.

Electra is expanding its global footprint and pushing the boundaries of Direct Aviation through its hybrid-electric, ultra-short takeoff and landing EL9 aircraft. Designed to operate from spaces as short as 150 feet, the EL9 will unlock new access points, reduce emissions, and cut travel times. Nearly two years of successful EL2 prototype demonstrations—from austere airstrips to campus settings at Virginia Tech—prove the concept’s versatility for commercial and defense customers. With more than 2,200 provisional orders valued at $13 billion, Electra plans certification by 2029. Read the full story here: https://electra.aero/news/electra-expands-u-s-and-european-facilities.

Manassas is proud of the hard work Electra has invested to reach this exciting expansion milestone—and proud to be the company’s birthplace. As Electra grows, the City continues to support its journey through a supportive ecosystem that fuels not only this success, but also a thriving base of world-class employers across multiple industries.

“Electra reflects the very best of Manassas—an innovative company born here and growing here”, said City of Manassas Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger. “From aviation to semiconductors, our City is proud to host private employers leading globally, while offering an excellent quality of life locally. Electra’s story proves Manassas is where world-class companies can take flight.”

“Electra’s growth demonstrates the strength of Manassas’s talent pipeline and infrastructure, including Virginia’s busiest regional airport,” noted Manassas City Manager Steve Burke.” Alongside leaders like Micron, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, and UVA Health, Electra showcases the City’s diverse economy—from aeronautics and naval technology to space systems—and why our professional and technical wages rank the ninth highest in Virginia.”
