Micron to Receive $275 Million for Manassas Expansion
Manassas, VA—December 12, 2024— City of Manassas announced today that Micron is slated to receive $275 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce to upgrade and expand Micron’s Manassas, VA facility. The grant is made available through the CHIPS and Science Act enacted by Congress in 2022.
According to a release by U.S. Department of Commerce, the expected capital expenditure for the modernization will be $2 billion over the next several years. The proposed project would onshore Micron’s 1-alpha technology to its Manassas facility, significantly increasing monthly wafer output. Micron’s 1-alpha node, an advanced DRAM process technology, offers meaningful improvements in bit density, power efficiency, and performance capability. Supporting a stable supply of Micron’s 1-alpha technology would advance U.S. supply chain resiliency because the legacy DRAM memory chips that would be made in Virginia are important components for the automotive and industrial markets. Micron’s proposed project in Manassas would be expected to create over 400 manufacturing jobs and up to 2,700 community jobs at the peak of the project.
Micron’s expansion further cements the City as one of Virginia’s most highly sought-after locations for advanced manufacturing companies. Manassas boasts:
- Third highest weekly wages in manufacturing in Virginia
- Sixth highest weekly wages and fifth highest professional and technical services wages in Virginia
- A regional employment hub with over 19,000 people commuting into the City for work
“Micron’s expansion in Manassas boosts the City’s growing economy and reflects its strong partnership with the nation’s leading memory chip manufacturer,” said Interim Manassas City Manager Doug Keen.
“Manassas has long been a hub for manufacturing, defense, professional and technical services, health care, and other high wage businesses,” noted Manassas Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger. “This announcement underscores the impact of global leaders like Micron, BAE, and Lockheed Martin, as well as emerging companies like RapidFlight and Electra.aero, on the City’s thriving workforce and economic growth.”
