When you think back to 6 months ago, it feels like years ago! February was such a different time; the local economy was thriving and unemployment in Manassas was at an unprecedented low of only 2%. Then the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything.
The City initially used CARES Act funds to help local businesses survive the economic shockwave that came with shutdown. The city is now focusing on another group in need of help – the many area workers who’ve been furloughed or lost their jobs. In all, $400,000 is being dedicated to programs designed to help residents find the jobs they want and get training they need to get back on their feet.
Manassas is one of the only localities in Northern Virginia using CARES Act money to directly help the local workforce. This program is also a great way to nudge the unemployment rate back down towards pre-COVID levels, which is critical for the area’s overall economic health. City officials are dedicated to supporting residents and the community in any way they can.
